Under new head coach Scott Hunt, the Morgan Trojans are finding out who they are in a hurry.

For one, the Trojans didn’t give up many buckets on Dec. 6 at American Heritage without getting one for themselves.

Trailing by one point, 18-19, through one quarter, the Trojans boys evened the score at 32-32 after two quarters of action.

In the third quarter, the Trojans had a nice run of points that led to a 52-45 advantage. But true to form in this seesaw battle, American Heritage would get a flurry of baskets to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period though, Morgan [2-5] would get a hard-fought 71-67 victory a long way from home. Bracken Saunders paced the Trojans with 25 points while Jake Hansen had a season-high 11.

Kolton Asay also splashed three three-pointers in the big win while Ben Russell chipped in seven. All told, Morgan’s big three were huge and scored right around what their per-game averages were.

In the win over AH, Jack Hurd had a career-high six points for the Trojans, knocking down two three-point shots. Nik Preece added five, while Mason Williams and Lincoln Gilson each had four points.

Then the Trojans found out what the other side of the basketball court looked like at Emery on Dec. 8. Morgan stayed within range of the 3A consolation champions, trailing 18-22 after one quarter.

Over the next two quarters though, the Trojans were outscored 38-13 en route to a 29-point loss, 48-77.

Mason Williams scored a career-high 11 points for a Morgan squad that also got nine points each from Bracken Saunders and Jeff Hansen. Ben Russell had five points, while Jack Hurd, Brady Hendrickson, and Kolton Asay each had three. Nik Preece added two points in the loss at Emery and so did Brody Peterson.

Nate Pace rounded out the scoring, getting one point on a trip to the foul line for Morgan, who will be at Wasatch on Dec. 13 and back home in Morgan’s main gym on Dec. 15 versus Bear River. λ
