Morgan’s young wrestling team continues to seek out the best competition in the state to improve their skills and test their strength. Thursday, Dec. 7, the defending 6A State Champions, Layton, traveled to Morgan for a dual and won all but three matches for the commanding 57-14 win. Friday and Saturday, the Trojans traveled to the Wasatch Intermountain Duals in Heber City to face off against top teams from Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Although Morgan only won one of their eight duals, wrestlers were able to face off against eight different opponents and gain valuable knowledge on the mat.

Against Layton, Treyson Rich (215) won an exciting sudden victory match 3-1 over Tyler Croston. With the score tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, Rich scored the first takedown in the sudden victory period. Ryler Jorgensen, wrestling at 120, earned the win over Aiden Bastian with a pin (2:23). Drew Korth (144) overpowered Tucker Sorensen for the 15-0 victory by tech fall in 2:43.

Friday and Saturday, Morgan wrestled eight full duals and earned the W against Duchesne 48-24 and lost a close match 42-39 to Central-Grand Junction (CO). Duals against Davis (42-27), Fruita Monument (C0) (49-23), Green River (WY) (43-30), Payson (48-24), Mountain Crest (51-25), and Mountain Ridge (52-21) didn’t end with the score the Trojans had hoped for, but the wrestlers left with tremendous experience.

Individually, senior Zak Sargent went 7-0 for the tournament at 190 pounds while junior Ryler Jorgensen amassed a 7-1 record at 120 pounds. Sophomore Gabe Toone earned a 5-2 record wrestling at 215 pounds.

The Trojans’ young team continues to gain early-season experience. At the Wasatch tournament, they wrestled a freshman and six sophomores in the majority of the duals along with two seniors and three juniors. In addition, they forfeited the 113-pound and 285-pound weight classes for each dual automatically giving up 12 points in each dual. Coach Kelly Wilson continues to develop his wrestlers against tough competition to prepare them for Region 13 and 3A State competition later in the season and at Divisionals and State.

Morgan wrestled at 4A Bear River Wednesday, Dec. 13. This weekend, Dec. 15-16, part of the team will travel to the Reno Tournament of Champions, and the remainder of the team will compete at the Christmas Clash in Herriman.

The Trojans will wrestle their first Region 13 dual Wednesday,  Dec. 20 at home. Varsity and JV will both begin at 5:30 pm.

Mark your calendars for Morgan’s two other home duals. Jan. 17, 2024,  the Trojans will take on Wasatch at home and Jan. 24, 2024,  Morgan will host the seven-time defending 3A Champions, Juab, in a dual.
