Free radon workshop coming to Morgan

MORGAN—There are many things that are a given when it comes to home safety. Things like an inspection before purchase, smoke detectors, Co2 detectors, locks on the door, home security, and more all keep loved ones safe and secure. There is, however, often one threat that goes undetected, and unnoticed until it’s too late: Radon.

Although it is the second leading cause of lung cancer, many either go without testing or don’t know how to test for the dangerous gas. According to the Weber-Morgan Health Department, Radon is “a naturally occurring, odorless, and colorless gas that can build up in the ground near your home,” and while it can be a bit intimidating to think of this silent killer lurking around a home or yard, “there are simple steps to test for radon and ways to remedy the situation if radon is found.”

The Weber-Morgan Health Department is partnering with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality to offer four free workshops to educate homeowners about the implications of radon and how to correct the problem by venting your home. A limited supply of free tests will be available to residents of Weber and Morgan Counties at each workshop.

The workshops will be held at different times, and dates around the area, but residents of Morgan County will be able to attend a workshop locally on Jan. 11, at 5 p.m. at the Morgan City Offices. Eleanor Divver, from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, will be the presenter for these workshops and will be addressing questions such as:

• Where does radon come from?

• How does radon get into your home?

• What is the health risk associated with radon?

• How can you test your home or living space for radon?

• If you have high levels of radon what are the next steps?

This free workshop will go a long way to helping the quality of life for Morgan residents, and will only cost time. More information about this, and other public health initiatives can be found at the Weber-Morgan Health Department website at https://www.webermorganhealth.org/. λ
