Veterans of Foreign Wars announce 2023 Voice of Democracy Scholarship and Patriot’s Pen Contest Winners

The veterans of Morgan County held their annual Christmas social Monday Dec. 11, 2023. Guest attendees were the winners of the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay and Patriot’s Written Essay contests, and their parents.

Ninth through 12th-grade students were eligible to participate in the Voice of Democracy audio contest. Students were required to complete a three-to-five-minute audio essay centered on “What are the greatest attributes of our democracy.” The winners of the contest from first place to fifth place were Willa Anderton, Asher Johnson, Paul Adams, Olivia Wilde, and Aly Spagnuolo.

Sixth through eighth-grade students were eligible to participate in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest. Students were required to write a 300–400-word essay with the theme, “How are you inspired by America.”

The winners of the contest from fifth place to first place were Elle Johnson, Lillian Ruby McMillan, Evelette Jo Anderson, Brooklyn Mae Hoffman, and McKenna Burby (Royal Lamb).

All winners received cash awards ranging from $50 to $200. One winner for each of 15 entries will advance to District and one winner from the District will advance to State. The State winner will advance to National and will receive a $5,000scholarship.

More than 100 students participate in these contests. We congratulate our winners!
